Fact from Fiction: Medical Marijuana Myths

Although medical marijuana is legal in Los Angeles, and in California in general, a lot of people still believe ingrained myths about it. If you’re still hesitant about taking advantage of medical marijuana, here are a few myths you should stop believing in.

  • Marijuana is a gateway drug. Many opponents of medical marijuana object to it because they view it as a gateway drug to harder substances. Studies show, however, that users do not eventually progress to harder drugs. Many of them are actually content with continuing cannabis use, hardly an indication of marijuana contributing to the country’s drug abuse problem.
  • Marijuana is addictive. Though marijuana is classed as a recreational substance like alcohol or tobacco, it actually doesn’t have the same addictive properties as the former two. A study showed that only 9% of cannabis users are dependent, while tobacco has 32% and alcohol has 15%, significantly larger amounts. Only a small amount of the population has a chance of becoming dependent.
  • Marijuana has no proven medical effect. Many think that medical marijuana is just capitalizing on the “high” effect to dull the pain. Medical studies show that there are actually measurable results of cannabis use in sufferers of nausea, pain, lack of appetite, and anxiety.
